Music and Writing Style And Audience
How do you classify your music?
Musically, I focus on instrumental fusion music that includes rock, classical, new age, smooth jazz, ambient (minimalism), electronic, gospel, and contemporary Christian. My writing involves a variety of things such as music reviews for CreatorsWeb and Indie-Music.com, a column for the faith section of a local newspaper and of course poetry.
I've always written poetry, but I'm not much of a lyricist. I love to sing, but I've never cared for the lyrics I write, so as odd as it may sound, I don't really mix my music with the words that I write. However, my new project, "Of An Ever Present Past", couples 28 of my poems with 80 minutes of my instrumental music. Right now they are sold separately but I hope to be able to offer them as a set soon.
The poetry that I write is modern (perhaps a little post-modern), free verse. I'm not afraid to use rhyme but I don't usually look for it. My favorite poet is Billy Collins. I've read all of his books and I don't think there is a single ending rhyme in any of his poems.
Do you target a specific audience? If so, who?
With the music I have found a somewhat of a market in the television/film/audio visual world. Not that I have achieved any real financial success here. There does seem to be an ongoing need for instrumental tracks.
As a poet, I target any one who likes to read modern poetry. Its a funny thing about poetry. There seems to be "millions" of people who say they write poetry, but so few people who read poetry. I'm happy to find a reader!
Musical Instruments - Recording - Computer Hardware - Software
What musical instruments do you play?
I play the piano. Well, I guess I
should say the keyboard. For years I just wanted to be a piano player, but
then I realized that all the bands were looking for a keyboard player. So,
now I mostly play my synthesizer which currently is limited to an Alesis QS
8. This is a fine synthesizer. Very affordable. It has some
great vintage synth sounds and some descent pianos. Its not the ultimate
instrument though. I keep hoping for a Kurzweil K2600, Korg Triton, 9 foot
Steinway... (That's my wife you hear screaming in the background. lol) For
some reason, I also play the harmonica, which would make sense maybe if I played
the guitar, but who ever heard of a piano/harmonica combo.
Do you record in a home studio?
Yes.
What equipment and software do you use?
I use Cubase VST along with EMU Audio Production System and my PC with an Alesis QS 8 as a controler. This set up is not the ultimate either, but it does allow me to build the soundscapes I enjoy creating
Musical Background -Influences
How did you get started playing music?
I started playing the piano by ear when I was four years old. Growing up, I spent most of my time playing what ever music I heard and liked. I was pretty self indulgent I guess. I was a wretched student because of it. It was always too much effort to read and play. I wish now that I had studied music more seriously and diligently. There are some advantages to playing by ear. For instance, I can transpose to just about any key on the fly which I've always found useful..
What has influenced your music the most?
This is hard to say because I like just about every kind of music. The limited study that I have done has of course been classical. I've had some great piano teachers over the years. The type of music I now play week by week as a worship leader in church is gospel and contemporary Christian. I listen to jazz and classic rock most of the time.
Music And Internet Marketing
How has the Internet effected you as a musician?
The internet has changed everything as far as I'm concerned. It has given me the opportunity to network with hundreds of great musicians and bands all over the world. I created my own publishing and promotion business. I've been able to find a market, small as it may be, for the instrumental tracks that I enjoy creating. This all came into focus because of the world wide web.
When did you start marketing your music on the Internet?
I think I started marketing and promoting on the Internet in about 1995 or 1996.
What has been the most effective way to market your music on the Internet?
Networking with other musicians and developing websites that draw music and entertainment related traffic. The Internet is driven by interest and/or need. Its a process of intersecting with people at that point. I've developed a system of over 150 websites which work at capturing some portion of the entertainment/music related traffic out there. This creates an opportunity for the musicians and artists I network with because as I draw entertainment traffic I can send it to them.
Musicians And The Future
What does the future hold for you?
I'll keep keep writing poems, articles, reviews. I'll keep playing and recording my instrumental music. I'll continue promoting independent musicians, unpublished writers, photographers, and artists.
